This week we have been learning how to solve a stage 7 strategy, I had to explain how I got my answer in brackets.

1. It rained 1.35 inches on Saturday and 1.98 inches on Sunday. How much did it rain on Saturday and Sunday combined? 3.33

(1+1=2)(0.3+0.9=1.2)(0.05+0.08=0.13.)

2. There were 7.6 litres of water in Jacob's bathtub. Then 2.9 litres drained out. How much water is left in the bathtub? 4.7

7.6 - 2.9 = 4.7

(0.7 - 0.2 = 0.5) + (.6 - .9 = 0.3)  

3. A carpenter bought a piece of wood that was 6.15 meters long. Then he sawed 2.14 meters off the end. How long is the piece of wood now? 4.01

6.15 - 2.14 = 4.01

(60 - 20 = 40) + (0.1 - 0.1 = 0) + (.5 - .4 = .1)

4. A chef bought 4.2 kilograms of almonds and 7.8 kilograms of pecans. How many kilograms of nuts did the chef buy in all? 12

4.2 + 7.8 = 12

(40 + 70 = 110) + (0.2 + 0.8 = 1)

5. It snowed 8.9 inches on Monday and 3.9 inches on Tuesday. How much did it snow on Monday and Tuesday combined? 12.8

8.9 + 3.9 = 12.8

(80 + 30 = 110) + (0.9 + 0.9 = 1.8)

6. It rained 0.97 cm on Monday. On Tuesday, it rained 0.4 cm less than on Monday. How much did it rain on Tuesday? READ CAREFULLY-THIS ONE WILL TRY AND TRICK YOU!  1.05

0.97 - 0.4 = 1.05

(0 - 0 = 0) + (0.9 - 0.4 = 0.5) + .7

7. Omar spent Saturday picking berries at a berry farm. In the morning, he picked 3.61 kg of berries. In the afternoon, he picked 2.4 kgs. How many pounds of berries did Omar pick in all? 6.01

3.61 + 2.4 = 6.01

(30 + 20 = 50) + (0.6 + 0.4 = 1) + .1

8. A bee colony produced 0.91 pounds of honey, but bears ate 0.9 pounds of it. How much honey remains? 0.01

0.91 - 0.9 = 0.01

(0 - 0 = 0) + (0.9 - 0.9 = 0) + .9

9. Oscar bought 5.87 pounds of melon and 3.18 pounds of cherries. How much fruit did he buy in all? 9.05

5.87 + 3.18 = 9.05

(50 + 30 = 80) + (0.8 + 0.1 = 0.9) + (.7 + .8 = 1.5)

10. Vince mixed 0.8 grams of salt into a pot of soup he was cooking. Before he served the soup, Vince added 0.25 grams of salt. How much salt did Vince put into the soup in all? 1.05

0.8 + 0.25 = 1.05

(0 + 0 = 0) + (0.8 + 0.2 = 1) + .5

This weeks task we are learning about Statistics. We had to Identify the uses of tenths to make numbers. We had to use graphs, Percentages, Decimals and Fractions to solve out our learning. The graphs showed us what we had to solve and work out on our own way.

John rode 2 kilometers on his bike. His sister Sally rode 3000 meters on her bike. Who rode the farthest and how much farther did they ride (answer in km)? 3 km

Jessica is measuring two ribbons. The first ribbon is 30 cm long. The second ribbon is 500mm long. How long are the two ribbons together? (answer in cm) 50 cm

Steven wakes up for school at 6:30am in the morning. If school starts at 8:00 am, how long does he have from the time he wakes up until school starts? (answer in minutes) 1 hr and 30 minutes

Stephanie and her best friend Brianne went to see a movie. It started at 1:45pm and ended at 4:00pm. How long was the movie? 2 hr and 15 minutes

Ezra's stuffed animal has a mass of 300 grams. How many milligrams is the stuffed animal? 300000

Skylar goes to a pumpkin patch and picks out a pumpkin that has a mass 6,000 grams. How many kilograms is the pumpkin? 6 kg

Question One

Miss Berry measured her hair at the beginning of June. It was 80cm long. She got 20cm cut off of it at the beginning of July. At the beginning of August her hair had grown to 90cm long.

How long was her hair at the beginning of July (in mm) after she had it cut? 60cm

How much did her hair grow in July (in mm)? 200mm

Question Two

Tihi was building a wall out of bricks. Each brick is 25cm long and 15cm high.

In 1 month Tihi had built a wall that was 20 bricks across and 30 bricks high.

How long is the wall (in m)? 5 meters

How high is the wall (in m)?4.5 meters high

During the holidays Tihi had a lot more time to build his wall. At the end of the holidays it was 2.5m longer and 3m higher than it was before. How many bricks did he add to his wall? 900 bricks

Question Three

The world record for the longest plank is 8 hours and 1 minute. What is that in seconds? 28860 seconds

Question Four

Chris was Pt England’s best long jumper. He had four attempts at the school record which was 6.54m.

On his first attempt he got 6.1m.

On his second attempt he jumped another 30cm.

On his third attempt he was only 2mm from breaking the record.

On his fourth attempt he beat the school record by 0.13cm

What distance did he jump on his: 6.67

Second attempt? 6.4

Third attempt?6.538

Fourth attempt?6.67

So I did 6 + 2 = 8 , 40 + 30 = 70 , 100 + 70 = 170, 8 + 170 = 178.
And the answer is 178.
